Beef Liver and Onions

Savor the timeless taste of Beef Liver with Caramelized Onions, where tender slices of liver are perfectly seasoned and paired with sweet, golden-brown onions for a hearty, flavorful meal that’s both comforting and nourishing.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb of beef liver, sliced
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup of milk (for soaking)
  • 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons of butter
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon of smoked paprika
  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Directions:

  1. Prepare the Liver:
    • Place the sliced beef liver in a shallow dish and pour the milk over it. Let the liver soak for 30 minutes to mellow out its strong flavor.
    • After soaking, remove the liver from the milk, pat dry with paper towels, and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika.
  2. Caramelize the Onions:
    • Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they soften and caramelize, about 15-20 minutes. Once caramelized, remove the onions from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Cook the Liver:
    • Lightly coat the seasoned liver slices in flour, shaking off any excess.
    • In the same skillet, add the remaining butter and olive oil. Heat over medium-high until the butter melts and begins to bubble.
    • Place the liver slices in the skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned on the outside and slightly pink in the center.
  4. Combine and Serve:
    • Return the caramelized onions to the skillet, spooning them over the liver slices. Cook for another 2 minutes to blend the flavors.
    • Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and serve hot.
